The Gift Of Giving

Have you ever watched the show Undercover Boss? For those of you who haven’t, the episodes feature high level executives who covertly take low level positions within their companies to see what is really going on in the day to day operations. As part of their journey, they sometimes have the opportunity to learn about a significant personal need that someone within their organization has, and, when they reveal their true identity at the end of the episode, they will make a substantial contribution toward meeting that need. While these executives have large salaries, luxury cars, and big homes, there is a certain sense of satisfaction evidenced when they have the chance to make a sizable impact in someone else’s life that goes beyond what their material means can provide.

Jesus said that it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). Regardless of how well off we are, there is a level of joy and fulfillment found in meeting the needs of others that simply can’t be obtained by acquiring more “stuff.” Those who go through life pursuing more money and possessions for the predominant purpose of personal consumption will never truly be satisfied. Furthermore, it is our giving that opens the door for God’s provision. Proverbs 11:24-25 NLT says, “Give freely and become more wealthy; be stingy and lose everything. The generous will prosper; those who refresh others will themselves be refreshed.” I encourage you to commit to find ways to help meet the needs of others, and, as you do, watch God prove faithful to abundantly provide for you in the process.
